How Kenya's designated ports of entry work

Kenya's Directorate of Immigration Services controls entry and exit through designated airports, seaports and land-border posts. Travellers should use a gazetted port and present themselves to immigration for processing.

What happens when you arrive at a Kenya port of entry?

Kenya Immigration's arrival-procedure guidance says all travellers — including foreign nationals, citizens and residents — must appear before an immigration officer with a valid passport or other acceptable travel document.

• Present a passport or accepted travel document valid for at least 6 months.
• Present yourself for biometric capture, including facial photograph and fingerprints where required.
• Foreign nationals may be asked to produce an eTA where required.
• Immigration may request a return or onward ticket or evidence of onward travel arrangements.
• You may be asked for evidence of sufficient funds for your stay.
• Keep hotel booking details or your host's physical address and phone number available.
• Be ready to show your intended Kenya travel itinerary.

Kenya eTA and port-of-entry rules

eTA eligibility is a national immigration matter, not something decided separately by each airport or border. Where eTA is required, travellers should obtain approval before beginning the journey. Kenya also has official exemptions, so not every international visitor needs to apply.

• Use the passport and identity details that match your approved eTA, if eTA applies.
• Keep the approved authorisation accessible during check-in and arrival.
• Do not confuse an active port with automatic eligibility to enter.
• Land travellers must also comply with the neighbouring country's immigration rules.
• Final admission is decided by Kenyan immigration authorities at the point of entry.

Departure responsibilities

Kenya Immigration says departure processing mirrors arrival procedures. Travellers must use valid travel documents and comply with immigration processing before leaving.

• Air passengers should present a boarding pass for inspection.
• Present a valid passport or acceptable travel document.
• Submit to immigration biometric processing where required.
• Travellers continuing to a third destination may be asked for an onward ticket or boarding pass.
• Exit through a designated port before the authorised period of stay expires.
